Description

The object in the image is called a Trumeau mirror.
Originally a French architectural term for the space between windows, the term "trumeau" later extended to mirrors, especially those designed to be placed above a fireplace mantel.
These mirrors are typically characterized by a large mirror section below a decorative panel, which often contains an oil painting, print, or a carved element, as seen in the image.
They are often ornate, featuring carved wood frames with gilt (gilded) or painted finishes, and were popular in 18th and 19th-century French design, in styles such as Louis XV or Louis XVI.
The upper panel often depicts scenes like still lifes, landscapes, or romantic/pastoral courtship scenes, as appears to be the case in your image.

The artwork in the upper panel of this Trumeau mirror is titled "Le Serment d'Amour" (The Oath of Love).
It is based on a famous 1780 painting by the renowned French Rococo artist Jean-Honoré Fragonard. The image you see is likely an engraving or etching made after his work, a common decorative practice for these mirrors in the 18th and 19th centuries.

What it Depicts
The scene is a classic example of "fêtes galantes"—romantic, idealized portrayals of the French aristocracy at play. Alamy

The Romantic Vow: A young couple is shown in an intimate embrace in a lush, wooded park. They are "swearing an oath" or pledging their eternal love to one another.

Classical Symbolism of this is: They stand before a stone pedestal topped with a statue of Cupids (putti) who are supporting a stone slab, symbolizing the divine witness to their romantic commitment.
The dense, "bosky" foliage and grand trees in the background are hallmarks of Fragonard's style, designed to create a sense of private, natural sanctuary for the lovers.
Description of this from Denver Art Museum
The Artists Involved
While Fragonard created the original composition, the specific print in your mirror was likely executed by a professional engraver to make the art more accessible for home decor:
Original Painter: Jean-Honoré Fragonard (1732–1806), one of the most prolific artists of the late Ancien Régime.
Likely Engraver: Jean Mathieu (1749–1815), who famously produced the 1786 engraving of this specific scene that became widely popular throughout Europe.

This is now part of an estate sale. The owner has kept it displayed in antique stores in Historic 1st City of Kansas around Ft. Leavenworth.

We have several more fine art pieces coming from the same place. Keep an eye out on Govdeals.com as we only sell at auction. We will make side sales outside of the Gov Auctions page. Thank you.
