Genuine Commonwealth of Virginia $5 Treasury Note issued in Richmond on July 21, 1862. Hand-signed and numbered.

Standout feature: Three distinct, heavy dark brown/rust stains in separate areas (central vignette, lower left portrait, and bottom over text/signatures) — creating a striking, battle-worn appearance.

Collectors often attribute such marks on Civil War-era notes to either:

- Ink spill from the Treasury clerk who hand-signed it (using iron-gall ink that rusts brown over time and commonly caused drips/smears during signing),

OR

- Authentic soldier's blood from battlefield carry (a known "story" on some Confederate/Virginia notes passed down as relics).

Either way, it's a rare and dramatic conversation piece. Most surviving examples from this issue don't show this level of intense, localized staining (some lots note general soiling, but not triple heavy spots like this).
