It is based on Charles Evan's (1850–1935) American Bibliography. Ralph R. Shaw (1907–72) and Richard Shoemaker's (1907–70) collaborative efforts continued American Bibliography.[1] American Bibliography contains the full text of all known existing books, pamphlets, and broadsides printed in the United States (or British American colonies prior to Independence) from 1639 through 1819, some 72,000 titles
Important notes: this tales up over 1,111 linear feet of shelving space.
Indexing challenge: The primary challenge with using these collections is the lack of indexing. To locate a specific document, a researcher would need to consult the printed set of GPO Monthly Catalogs to look up a topic or title. The catalog would provide accession numbers, which then would be cross referenced with the physical card boxes to identify the documents location in the card boxes.
